HIV AND AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL AT WESTONARIA

Westonaria community, religious sectors representatives, traditional healer’s organizations and various stakeholders joined our Department to honour those who passed away due to HIV and AIDS pandemic.

The event at Westonaria Sports Complex on 22 May 2009, culminated in a candlelight by everyone present and pledging a united support to people living with HIV. Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu acknowledged that more work still need to be done in creating awareness about HIV and Aids.

The MEC further reaffirmed the department’s commitment in combating the pandemic. “We have prioritized HIV and AIDS and stated our plans to reduce the rate of new infections by 50%. We also commit ourselves to expand access to treatment, care and support to at least 80% of HIV positive people,” she said.
