Emergency Medical Services

Programme purpose
To render rapid, effective and efficient emergency medical services and non-emergency services in accordance with provincial norms and standards in according.
 
Plans for 2009-14
By 2014 the Department will achieve the following:
 

  • Provincially there will be rendering equitable services that have no boundaries and an improved access and outcomes
  • Use a model of service delivery that will enable the most appropriate resources allocation and greater flexibility (doing away with municipal boundaries that exists currently) to respond to changing environments and community expectations
  •  Developing demand management strategies, which will assist in ensuring effective use of ambulance and non-emergency patient transport resources
  • Improvement of response times to priority one calls
  • Provision of a high standard of care, with early intervention (the Golden Hour) and delivery of patients in the most appropriate facility
  • Contribute to the development of new models of managing ambulance arrival at emergency department (A&E concept) integrating emergency care personnel with the entire spectrum of the health professions (paramedical, nursing and medical)
  • Perfecting the Bed Bureau module for equitable utilization of available beds in the Province
  • Strengthening the Public Private Partnership in the Emergency Medical Sector
  • Implement a sustainable Quality assurance programme for the improvement of quality care and equipment in Gauteng
  • Improving information management and system to maximize revenue collection
  • Improve awareness of appropriate use of Gauteng Emergency Medical Services

Activities

  • Procurement of additional resources using alternative mechanisms
  • Strategic standby points for ambulances and response units (motorbikes and high riders) EMS bases and identifying peak areas
  • GPS mapping of informal settlements and farms, SANRAL Road information systems
  • Collaboration with municipalities to enforce house and street numbers displays
  • Collaboration with social services to research and determine the cause and reduction of trauma
  • Public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the use of ambulances
  • Real time tracking of all operational vehicles
  • Procurement of Digital communication systems for units
