The Old Natalspruit Hospital comprising a multi-storey building was erected in 1959. The facility was an 870 bed hospital (784 beds in use) with both level 1 and 2 beds. It was situated in Katlehong in the north western corner of Kathorus, an amalgam of three townships, Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus, located 30km south-east of Johannesburg. The hospital was situated in a high dolomite risk region. An investigation undertaken in 1985 revealed that a very high potential exists for serious damage to buildings to occur to any time, posing a health and safety risk to patients and staff.

The concept behind the R1.7 billion construction of the New Natalspruit Hospital was to replace the old Natalspruit Hospital, which was on a high dolomite risk area and to improve access to health services by delivering a 821 bed regional hospital. The new Hospital is a level one (1) and two (2) hospital rendering level 1 & 2 service and a comprehensive Primary Care Service up to General Practitioner’s level and first line Specialist service for patients, out-patient and emergency departments.
